9 Ways Clutter Messes With Your Health And Relationships

Are you thinking how clutter messes with your health and relationships?

Most people are clueless at how much their clutter affects them. It is only when you decide to start clearing it out that you realize how much better you feel with out it.

Watch out for 9 ways having clutter effects you  that creep into your life.

1.  Clutter can depress you. 

Clutter makes your energy become stagnant. It pulls you down and can make you depressed. Feelings of hopelessness emerge compounded by the clutter. In order to be relieved of this feeling, a space needs to be cleared for something new to come into your life.

The reason this works is that depression is actually telling you it is time to do something else. The act of taking out the garbage can actually be freeing. It is no longer in your space.

My tool that I use when I am depressed and need things to change is I Do A 25 Fling ‘THROW AWAY’ Boogie. It gets me up and moving. I count even the smallest of things. It gets me in the present moment where action happens.

2.  Clutter can make you feel tired and lethargic.

When energy isn’t flowing in the space you are residing, nothing happens. I remember those days! For years my home was filled with so much clutter there were pathways. If I wanted to get to something I wanted to use, I would have to move things just to get to it. Motivation was at an all time low.

I felt I was in a maze that I was never going to get out of. Rarely did I think I should just get rid of some things. Instead, I was always trying to figure out how to organize my clutter.

Most people who have clutter say they can’t find the energy to begin to get rid of it. What they don’t realize it is the ‘stagnant energy’ that builds up around the clutter. That is what causes the body to become tired and lethargic. When you get rid of the clutter, it actually frees up energy in your home and that in turn releases new vitality in your body.

3.  Clutter can congest your body.

With lots of clutter in your home, the energy in there gets congested. So does your body. People with lots of clutter generally don’t get enough exercise. Most have dull, clogged complexions; and show no vitality in their eyes. People with little clutter have more interest in becoming healthy with exercise than to get emotionally attached to stuff.

This is what happened to me. As I got rid of my clutter that no longer served me, my interest in working out increased. Throughout my journey I was trying to do it all. Now I see how much of an uphill battle to exercise it was in the beginning. At the time I felt like I was failing every time I started and couldn’t stay with it. In hindsight I see now how I was preparing to make working out as a part of my life.


Today I can say I have been working out consistently 2 to 3 days a week for over a year. Today my body craves working out.  Did I say I live with fibromylagia and arthritis along with many other physical challenges? I still deal with pain on a daily basis. It is just a different kind of pain that I can handle better than when I wasn’t active.

4.  Clutter can cause disharmony.

Want to know the major cause of arguments in families and between housemates, business partners, and coworkers? It is clutter. If you live or work knee-deep in the stuff and those around you do not, their lifestyle will not have any effect on your progress, but yours most certainly can affect theirs.

Clear up your clutter and then you will be able to open up to higher possibilities of what you can do together.

Won’t that be much more interesting than arguing about mundane junk? I have members in my Closed Facebook Group Marilyn’s Way  that changed before my very eyes! One family recently went to Disney World. This member has been releasing the clutter in her home and established to delegate specific chores for her children in which they are happy to do because now the entire family has time to do fun things.

5.  Clutter can confuse you.

When you live surrounded by clutter, it is impossible to have clarity about what you are doing in your life. When you clear it, you can think more clearly and life decisions become easier. Being clear of clutter is one of the greatest gifts I gave myself. I am like a sponge. I absorb everything around me. Too much clutter makes it even more difficult to process my thoughts. Have I mentioned I have Attention Deficit Disorder? Today I am now discovering and creating the life I want.

6.  Clutter can make you procrastinate.

Most that have lots of clutter tend to put off things until ‘tomorrow.’ The clutter stagnates your energy making it difficult to get yourself to do anything.

I was a 5+ year pajama junkie. I procrastinated everything. After I began to clear the clutter, I was surprised and probably everyone else by wanting to do things I had put off for a long time. One of the things I have implemented is gardening. I am in my 7th season. It has opened up my world. Last year I incorporated a workout regime at the gym.

7.  Clutter can keep you in the past.

If your home is filled with clutter, there is no room for anything new to come into your life. Instead, you tend to look back rather than forward in your life. You blame the past for your current situation instead of taking responsibility for creating a better tomorrow.

Clearing clutter is a way to deal with your problems and move forward. If you want to create a better tomorrow, you must clear up the past.

Don’t let your life slip away. Sit down right now and ‘write a list of all the things you would love to do’ if only your clutter were sorted, and let this be the inspiration for you to get on with it. Remember, we only have one life on earth. What will you do to make it better?

8.  Clutter can affect the way people treat you.

We teach people how to treat ourselves. So if you value yourself and look after yourself, people will treat you well. If you “let yourself go” and allow the junk to mount up around you, you may attract people who mistreat you in some way. Why? Because subconsciously you feel that is what you deserve. When you sort out your home, you can improve all of your relationships in the process.

9.  Clutter can sidetrack you from important things.

Do you own your stuff or does it own you? Everything you own has a call on your attention, and the more clutter you have, the more your energy is tied up in mundane matters. When you clear out your clutter, you leave yourself free to put the important things in your life in perspective rather than being constantly embroiled in the details of day-to-day maintenance.

Learning to understand how your clutter can affect you helps with looking at it in a new way. Soon you begin to make new decisions about whether you want to keep it or not.
