Let’s Spruce Up The Bedroom!

declutter bedroom

Let’s spruce up the bedroom by decluttering, cleaning and organizing it! I have laid out a step by step plan with photos to make it easy for you to get started. What better time to spruce up your bedroom than the month of February!

It is ‘Sweethearts Month’!

We all deserve a good nights sleep. Back in February 2011 I decluttered my bedroom and as a treat I bought myself a new comforter set. This was a game changer for me! I  only left things I loved in the room. This led me to make my bed daily and enjoy doing it. Why? Because each night right before I end my day, I love turning down the bed.

Let's Spruce Up The Bedroom!

The day has ended. Whether I had a good day or bad one, it has ended. I make a point to ‘Let It Go’. The night is for me to refresh myself and begin the new day come morning. When I feel rested I am ready to face the new day.

Practicing The 9 Daily Habits , we wake up to a shiny sink, we know what we are wearing and have an area called a ‘Launch Pad’ where we always have our purse and keys there along with anything that is going with us out the door.

Let’s Get Started!

Declutter First!

Set up a station of containers for each. ‘Throw Away, ‘Put Away’, ‘Give Away’.  Any containers will work. Boxes are usually easily available.  We must ‘first clear the area of unwanted things’ that have been taking up residency. It is time to evict them!

Start Cleaning!

The following is a simple list to follow in the order it is laid out.  Following in this order keeps you from having to re clean things. We start at the top and work towards the bottom in a clockwise movement.

Let’s Organize!

The first thing I want you to do is select 3 ‘Go To’ outfits.  Yes, that’s right. These outfits should always be ready to go should you have to leave at a moments notice. I am giving the example of casual. You can apply the style of clothes to your situation. We have to get away from this ‘I don’t have anything to wear’ way of thinking. Make these outfits easily available.

Hope this list will be helpful in making your bedroom special and enjoyable to sleep in. BUT REMEMBER…

Practice The 9 Daily Habits First!

Allow Enough Time To Do Them In Your Day

Do the February Event at your own pace. Get what you can get done but only after you have completed the 9 Daily Habits .

(Side Note:) I know many of you are anxious to dive into this project. If you are new to the system, please begin with practicing the 9 Habits first. The following are the 9 Habits.

I used to focus too much on decluttering and not enough time on establishing a great set of habits to get myself from one day to the next easily. I tried several habits and the ones above are the ones that made the cut.

Many of the habits are ones that most of us do not want to do. The thing is the 9’s are Key to making your day to day activities easier. Make peace with them any way you can. Be creative. The goal is for these 9 specific habits to become on auto pilot.  It will make your decluttering go smoother.

Hope To See You There!

I have committed myself to paint the ceiling and the walls. The ceiling paint I chose is Zinsser Ceiling Paint And Primer. I did my kitchen and living room last year and was pleased with it. It goes on pink so you can see where you have painted. And with the primer built in I only had to do it once. Ceilings are never my favorite.

I also have some paint I bought last year for the walls.  I am using Dutch Boy Dirt Fighter Satin Paint. It will be great when it is done!

  3. Hi Marilyn, I try to get rid of clothes I dont wear but I need to go thru sock drawers too. It does make such a difference with sleep.
Having a nice clean bedroom is liking sleeping in a nice hotel 🙂
Thanks for inspiring mr to work on mine.

    • Interesting you should say something about clothes! In March I have the event Declutter Your Clothes. It also happens in August too. When I created the system Marilyn’s Way Home Keeping Made SIMPLE I knew I had to build a maintenance program into it. That is the reason for the monthly events.

Yes, sleep in so important! I have sleep apnea and it is crucial to keep my bedroom clutter free. Back in February of 2011 I did a MAJOR declutter in my bedroom and the new rule was to only keep things in there that I love and it has been working ever since. Thank you for commenting!

  4. I love the Give Away, Throw Away, Put Away colorful signs on this post. Do you have a printable version of them please? Thank you!

  5. Hi Marilyn,

I have lost weight this year and have tons of clothes to give away. Because of Covid, I can’t find a place that takes them anymore. And some have tags on it!!! But I accumulated all the clothing I can’t wear anymore and put them down the basement until covid is over and I can drop them off.
I like my bedroom to look like a hotel room, so I’m constantly tidying it up. I make my bed the first thing in the morning and have no clutter around. I think I may have OCD because I can’t sleep if things are left undone.
